4th Generation Family Business
Pelican was appointed Yutong importer for the UK and Ireland in 2014. In that year 19 vehicles were sold. Since then the business has grown its sales volume every year whilst continually investing in people, equipment, premises, training and parts stock to ensure service support is always available for the expanding vehicle parc. The 1,000th Yutong vehicle to be sold in the UK entered service in September 2023. In 2018, we purpose-built a new showroom and service centre to better serve our customers. However, due to rapid growth, we quickly outgrew this facility. In 2022, we opened a new parts warehouse, followed by a larger showroom and service centre in 2023. The original property has been retained for our, ‘Completed in the UK’ programme, continuing to play a vital role in our operations.
Pelican Engineering was founded in 1919 by Ernest Crump when the army no longer required his services as a dispatch rider at the end of the First World War. Searching for an original name for his new business, he remembered his regimental mascot, the Pelican, and transferred the name to his new business hoping it would bring him good fortune there too. The company began by converting surplus military trucks into civilian use. In 1934 Pelican became the first official Foden Trucks dealer and now over 100 years later trucks are still a very important part of our business with our DAF and MAN truck dealerships supporting Yorkshire truck operators. Today Pelican is a fourth generation family business managed by the grandson of the founder with three generations of the family active in the business.
